To say that Richard’s day had not gone as planned would have been a gross understatement. Instead of merely enduring an awkward outing with Miss Martell and then escaping to plan his tour of country estates, Richard’s world had been neatly upended and all the normalcy tipped out. His father was not his father, his mother was an adulteress, and Mr. Malham thought he was a madman and a liar. He wondered if he would ever regain his equilibrium after today.

With a tired sigh, he knocked on the door of General Stone’s house and was shown in. It almost eased his heavy heart to hear the familiar voice of his commanding officer call out, “Colonel Fitzwilliam, what are you doing here?”

“Sir, I have come about my commission.”

“And it cannot wait until tomorrow or Monday?”

“My circumstances have changed drastically in the last several hours and I would prefer to tell you about it myself rather than have you read it in tomorrow’s papers.”

“This sounds quite serious. You had better come in and have a seat.”

“I would prefer to stand, sir.”

General Stone remained silent while Richard repeated his bizarre tale. When he was done, General Stone leaned back in his seat and steepled his fingers. “You know, Fitzwilliam, I’ve never been one to think your deeds were lacking. Even before you saved my life, it was my intention to advance you as far as I could. Now that you have been made a duke and the matter is out of my hands, I hope you will not mind if I brag about how I knew you before you were titled. Perhaps I’ll even take credit for your good fortune by telling everyone you would never have attracted the Regent’s notice had I not gotten in the way of that damned bullet and given you cause to rescue me.”

“Of course, sir. I would be only too happy for you to take all the credit.”

General Stone slapped his leg and laughed, and then sat forward in his seat. “Come, Fitzwilliam, let’s not wait until later. Take a seat and tell me what else you have come to say.”

Richard took a seat across from his general. He hated to give up his commission, but it had to be done. He had far too many obligations as Duke for him to retain it. “Sir, I have come to request a leave of absence and to inform you of my intent to sell my commission.”

“Of course I’ll grant it, though I wish to say no. I had intended to offer you a promotion and send you abroad on another tour of service, but I can see I need to find someone else.”

“Where was I to go?”

“Lützen. You did so well in Saxony that I had hoped you would do well in a place similar to it. I need to send seven more battalions to join the Sixth Coalition. I had intended to appoint you Major General under Waverly.”

“Thank you, sir. I would have been honoured to accept
